Group F: PSG through – Milan victory is only of limited use
- Dortmund – Paris St-Germain 1:1
PSG did not avoid their first defeat in the group stage of the Champions League since 2011 without trembling. In a highly attractive game in Dortmund, the result was the most boring. Karim Adeyemi scored for Borussia (51′), just 5 minutes later 17-year-old Warren Zaïre-Emery equalized for the Parisians with a converted rebound. PSG had left one top-class player after another, especially in the first half. But Dortmund, who had already qualified, also had numerous opportunities. The draw was enough for the French because Newcastle didn’t win in the parallel game.
In an equally animated game in Newcastle, the guests prevailed thanks to a strong final phase. Christian Pulisic scored from nowhere to equalize 1-1 after an hour. Samuel Chukwueze secured victory for Milan 6 minutes before the end – thanks to a pass from substitute Noah Okafors – and thus their place in the Europa League over the winter. The English dominated at the start and took the lead with a powerful finish from Joelinton (33′). In the final phase, both Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle) and Rafael Leao (Milan) failed due to the aluminum.
Group H: Porto solid – Antwerp with a surprise
8 goals were scored in the direct duel for the round of 16 ticket between Porto and Donetsk, who were tied on points. The Portuguese were dominant for a long time and led 3:1 and 4:2, Shakhtar managed to score the next goal in each case. Galeno scored twice for the hosts in the first half, Stephen Eustaquio maneuvered the ball into his own goal to the detriment of Porto (72′).
- Antwerp – Barcelona 3:2
In a spectacular final phase, Antwerp fought for a victory against the great Barcelona. It was the first points for the underdog in this CL campaign. Barça seemed to crash the Belgian party in the 90th minute: 17-year-old Marc Guiu scored to equalize 2-2. After the third Catalan defensive mistake of the evening, George Ilenikhena secured the victory. The Barcelona defense didn’t look good even with the goals from Arthur Vermeeren (after 75 seconds) and Vincent Janssen (56th). Ferran Torres equalized for the first time after exemplary preparatory work from Lamine Yamal (35′).
Group E: Atletico without effort – Celtic with a premiere
In the duel for group victory among those who had already qualified, Atletico easily prevailed at home. The Madrilenians took the lead after just 6 minutes through Antoine Griezmann. Samuel Lino’s 2-0 with a powerful half-volley came shortly after the break, and Lazio missed the start twice. The Romans had chances in the first half, but after the second goal the home team remained clearly superior.
At Celtic Park, too, the final result was only determined after an exciting final phase. Yankuba Minteh equalized for Feyenoord, who had already qualified for the Europa League, 8 minutes before the end. But Gustaf Lagerbielke secured Glasgow’s first win of the campaign in added time. Luis Palma scored the opening goal for the hosts with a penalty (33′). Feyenoord became the first Dutch team to lose 8 CL away games in a row.
