Only the Greens gain a point

The traffic light coalition has to manage a huge crisis with Russia’s escalation of the conflict over Ukraine. So far, this has not had any recognizable, clear effects on the reputation of the parties, but it has on the approval of the Federal Chancellor.

In the Sunday question, the Union is the strongest force ahead of the SPD for the fourth week in a row. In the RTL/ntv trend barometer, 27 percent of those surveyed said they would vote for the CDU or CSU if there were federal elections this Sunday. Also unchanged, 23 percent of those surveyed spoke out in favor of the SPD, followed by Bündnis90/Die Grünen, who were able to make up a point with 17 percent compared to the previous week. There was also no change in the other parties compared to the previous week: FDP and AfD ranked at 9 percent, the Left Party at 6 percent.

In the week after Olaf Scholz’ trip to Russia, 40 percent of those surveyed said they were satisfied with the Chancellor’s work. This mood is mainly supported by the SPD and the Greens. In the SPD camp, 86 percent of those surveyed said they were satisfied with Scholz, and 54 percent of the Greens. The majority of supporters of the other parties, including the FDP, are not satisfied with the chancellor.

In a direct comparison to CDU and Union faction leader Friedrich Merz, Scholz is clearly ahead: 42 percent of those surveyed would prefer the Social Democrats, six percentage points more than in the previous week, while Merz slipped from 21 to 20 percent. 88 percent of SPD voters would vote for Scholz, while only 52 percent of Union voters are convinced of Merz.

Lots of encouragement for Lauterbach

53 percent of those surveyed were satisfied or even very satisfied with Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach. Not only the supporters of the SPD (81 percent) and Greens (68 percent), but also those of the Union (64 percent) and the Left (58 percent) are mostly satisfied with Lauterbach’s crisis management.

72 percent of those surveyed said the conflict in Russia was the most important issue, followed by the ongoing pandemic at 65 percent. The topics of the Olympics (15 percent), re-election of Federal President Steinmeier (10 percent), price increases (9 percent) and the climate crisis (7) are also currently moving people.

In the poll, which was conducted prior to the recent escalation of the Russia conflict, 49 percent of respondents said they were “very concerned” – six percentage points more than in the previous week. Only 11 percent said they were not at all concerned.
