Union slips back behind the SPD

The Union loses a point in the trend barometer. On the question of chancellor, incumbent Scholz is well ahead of the new CDU chairman Merz.

In the first RTL/ntv trend barometer after Friedrich Merz was elected CDU chairman, the Union lost one percentage point and is now behind the SPD again. The left gains one point, the values ​​for the other parties remain unchanged.

If there were a federal election now, the parties could expect the following result: SPD 25 percent (Bundestag election 2021: 25.7 percent), CDU/CSU 24 percent (24.1), Greens 16 percent (14.8), FDP 10 percent (11 .5), AfD 10 percent (10.3), Left 6 percent (4.9).

9 percent of voters would choose other parties (8.7). The proportion of non-voters and undecided is currently 22 percent and thus below the proportion of non-voters in the federal election (23.4 percent).

If those entitled to vote could elect the Chancellor directly and had the choice between incumbent Olaf Scholz and Friedrich Merz, 48 percent would currently choose Scholz and 19 percent for Merz.

Almost half (49 percent) of Union supporters would choose Merz, while 84 percent of SPD supporters would prefer Scholz. 27 percent of the supporters of the CDU and CSU would choose the SPD politician, only 6 percent of the SPD supporters Merz.

Confidence in economic institutions is falling

At the turn of the year 2021/22, Germans have less trust in seven out of eleven economic institutions than in the previous year. Germans have less trust than in the previous year in the Volks- und Raiffeisenbanken (- 8 percentage points), the savings banks (- 7 percentage points), municipal companies (- 6 percentage points), banks (- 4 percentage points) as well as in trade unions and insurance companies and advertising agencies (each -1 percentage point).

Employed Germans have the highest level of trust in their own employer, unchanged at 71 percent. Municipal companies follow in second place with 67 percent. As in the previous year, advertising agencies enjoy the lowest level of trust with a value of 3 percent.

The data on party and chancellor preferences were collected by the market and opinion research institute Forsa on behalf of RTL Germany from January 18 to 24, 2022. Database: 2502 respondents.
