Ruben Östlund, Palme d’or with Sans Filtre: “I like it when the left-wing press doesn’t like the film”

Five years after The Square, his first Palme d’Or, the Swedish director joins the very select club of filmmakers who twice won the supreme trophy at the Cannes Film Festival. We met director Ruben Östlund.

Winner of the Palme d’Or in 2017 for The Square, Ruben Östlund once again won the supreme award with Without filter (Triangle of Sadness), his first film shot in English. Woody Harrelson and Harris Dickinson are notably part of the cast of this social satire where it is a question of class struggle.

The story is that of a couple of wealthy models cruising aboard a yacht whose captain turns out to be a convinced Marxist. But the boat in question sinks and the survivors find themselves on a desert island. Causticity, darkness and feeling of unease are at the rendezvous of this feature film by the Swedish director.

The filmmaker talks to us in particular about his relationship with the public and critics, his concern to write with the potential reactions of the public constantly in mind. “I want the audience to feel like they’re on a roller coaster and send them on this adventure. It was my goal.”
