Rugby: Union Bordeaux Bègles supporters arrive in Leicester… and learn that the match is canceled

Despite the disappointment, Matthieu, Carole, Thomas and Darlene still had a good weekend with friends in England

Of course, as Matthieu maintains, “Leicester is not the most touristic city” in England. This Girondin and his friends, Carole, Thomas and Darlene, will be satisfied with it. Leaving Friday morning January 21 from Bordeaux to attend the Champions Cup match of their favorite team, UBB, against the Leicester Tigers, the four friends learned of the cancellation of the game, due to Covid in the ranks of the ‘Union Bègles Bordeaux, when they had already set foot on English soil.

“We reserved our places as soon as the EPCR (European Professional Club Rugby) announced the dates of the matches. We knew there was a risk, with travel restrictions during this health crisis, but we had chosen to wait until the last moment before canceling. On boarding the plane at Mérignac, the lights are still green. On arrival at Gatwick airport, too. “It was on the bus to reach Leicester that we started to see the first alerts, tweets from journalists who spoke of positive Covid cases at UBB”. The sentence falls shortly after: match canceled. The Girondin friends will have to kill time other than by attending a rugby game…

“It’s true, it’s a disappointment but we still had a good weekend,” tempers Matthieu, this Sunday evening, as the time to board the return flight approaches. “Leicester, we quickly go around. But we found friends who live in England and who came to see us there. We had fun in an indoor mini golf course. And we still went for a walk to the stadium to see what it looked like, just to mark the occasion. »

It must be said that Matthieu, Carole, Thomas and Darlene are regulars on European trips. “We do at least one a year.” On their list, Sale, Exeter, Edinburgh… and Leicester, for an experience without an oval ball but which will certainly not discourage them from making other trips for the UBB.
