This morning, these are the characteristics of the PlayStation VR2 which were officially revealed to the general public during the CES 2022. The new helmet of Sony will have some under the hood, but it seems that the next models from Meta, the Quest Pro (Project Cambria) and the Quest 3 are not lacking on that side either.
The origin of this information leaked, there is first Guo Mingchi, analyst at Tianfeng International. This nice gentleman gave up, in a report, lots of little details on what he calls the “next high-end virtual reality headset” from Oculus, the Quest 3. In fact, he was wrong, because he is in fact talking about Quest Pro better known today by its code name Project Cambria. Here is the part that interests us on its publication:
- We expect Meta to release the new Oculus Quest 3 premium VR headset in the second half of the year (mid-2022). We estimate that deliveries in 2022 will be 1 to 2 million units;
- Quest 3 is the first Meta VR device to use Mini LED panels. This technology can provide a better immersive experience. Quest 3 is equipped with two 2.48 “Mini LED displays, the unit price is $ 25-30, the resolution is 2160 × 2160, and the vendors are Sharp and JDI;
- Quest 3 is the first Meta VR device to use 2P Pancake lenses (1P Fresnel lenses in the past). Quest 3 is equipped with two Pancake 2P lenses with a unit price of US $ 10-15. The suppliers are Yujingguang and Sunny Optical (both share the order);
- We expect Meta’s VR to grow by around 30% to 12 million units in 2022.
On the other hand, the material analyst XR Bradley Lynch, who is based in part on this report, has released other small additional information which, if confirmed, is very promising. Indeed, according to him, the Oculus Quest Pro is scheduled for the end of 2022 and should sell around 3 million copies in the first year.. the Quest 3 is scheduled for the end of 2023 and should be equipped with a home processor manufactured by Meta although the future Qualcomm XR 3 should then be available. In addition, it would use Micro-OLED (uOLED) panels which would be manufactured by Changxin Technology. As a reminder, this technology is today the must in the field of display.
Meta Cambria (Q2 2022) will include MiniLED displays. Sales target of 3 million units in its first year.
Quest 3 should include uOLED. Meta has signed an agreement to build production lines for these screens with Changxin Technology
Even though Qualcomm Snapdragon XR3 should be available at the end of 2023:
Meta is hoping to have their own silicon design ready for Quest 3. And not rely on a SoC that all smaller XR players will use. Mainly with a focus on a GPU that is better designed for VR loads
