Rupture of the water pocket: how to recognize it?

She has played many tricks on many women! In the middle of the street or in a store, the famous rupture of the water pocket can occur at any time, generally near the end. What happens during this rupture? What are the symptoms and what should you do when it happens? We will explain everything to you.

The rupture of the water pocket is the event that marks the start of labor and delivery. The pocket containing the amniotic fluid, which protected the fetus, is broken and then evacuates its contents. Is it the same for all women? How can we be sure that this is the rupture of the water pocket and how do we act at that time?

Water bag rupture: symptoms

For some women, the pocket of water may rupture suddenly and unexpectedly, although this is very rare. For most women, leakage of amniotic fluid usually occurs fairly gradual. At this point, however, and given all the symptoms present during pregnancy, it can be potentially difficult to recognize the difference between urine and water. During the last period of pregnancy, it is indeed quite common to feel a small stream of urine.

One of the ways to know when the water pocket is broken is the smell of amniotic fluid, different from urine, which is much stronger. If the fluid is green or brown, it is best to go to the hospital immediately, your baby may have had bowel movements in utero, which could put him at risk.

What to do when the water pocket breaks?

If you think the water bag has broken, you must call the maternity hospital or the gynecologist to prevent them. Childbirth usually begins 12 to 24 hours after the water pocket breaks. If the flowing liquid is transparent, it means you can take your time to get to the maternity ward. If, on the other hand, the waters are mixed with blood, it’s better to go quickly.

From the moment the water bag has ruptured, your child willis less protected against infections, just like you. So be very careful with your personal hygiene. Do nothing that could introduce bacteria into your vagina. It is recommended to use sterile compresses to mop up the liquid and to keep the area clean.

Premature rupture of the water pocket

Even if it is a strange feeling, the break-up does not necessarily have to be a concern, especially if it occurs close to the due date. However, if you face a premature rupture of the waters, i.e. before 37 weeks of pregnancy, contact your doctor immediately. This is a fairly rare situation, but you will need to be fully screened. Likewise, if you notice anything unusual, such as green or brown water, approach the medical profession as soon as possible.
