Computer attacks on a scale never before observed and carried out by pro-Russian hacker groups are affecting numerous French ministerial services.
The digital services of several French state services are the target of a cyberattack, which began on Sunday March 10 and continues this Monday March 11. Here’s what we know about him so far.
DDOS attacks
The Prime Minister’s team indicated that the attacks are based on traditional technical methods, but whose intensity is “unpublished”. According to information from BFMTVthese are denial of service (DDOS) attacks which consist of bombarding a platform with requests with the aim of taking it offline.
“A crisis unit was activated yesterday evening to deploy countermeasures and guarantee the continuity of IT services”, communicated the government. The Interministerial Digital Directorate (DINUM) and the National Information Systems Security Agency (ANSSI) were notably called upon to try to stem the attacks.
These have already been claimed by two groups of pirates, Anonymous Sudan And NoName057(16). Well known in the community, they are reputed to be pro-Russian and are suspected of targeting targets designated by the Kremlin.
Olympics, European elections… More attacks to come!
Cyberattacks against France originating directly or indirectly from Russia have intensified since the start of the war in Ukraine. Last September, the Corbeil-Essonnes hospital was, for example, the victim of a data breach orchestrated by the Lockbit group.
Two weeks ago, ANSSI warned of the increase in cyberattacks in the run-up to the Olympic Games, estimating that threats, already on the rise in 2023, should further intensify as this event approaches.
BFMTV also recalls that the European elections of June 9 could also constitute a prime target for pro-Russian hackers. Stéphane Bouillon, Secretary General of Defense and National Security (SGDSN), recently spoke of a high risk of foreign manipulation.
A few weeks ago, it was Sébastien Lecornu, the French Minister of the Armed Forces, who sounded the alarm, calling for the strengthening of the cybersecurity of his ministry.
