Rust celebrates its tenth anniversary by adding backpacks

A survival without a backpack, it’s like a kangaroo without a belly pocket: it works, but something is missing. Facepunch Studios will finally fill this gap on February 1 with bags you can make to take more gear with you (or collect more resources in a single trip). These new items will be available this week on the branch beta.

Backpacks will obviously only be the warning shot before the real big updates of 2024. Facepunch plans in particular to introduce motorcycles, a clan system, a tutorial to make the experience more flexible for new players or even new Monuments, additional structures to garnish the dusty universe of Rust. The generation of the explorable world will also be revisited in 2024 with a new biome and procedurally generated caves, not to mention future buildable lakes and canyons. At the same time, the ports will be deepened, and the Maritime Monuments (like the oil platform) will be reworked to weaken their defensive possibilities, considered too effective.

Of rust and bones

Facepunch Studios is also working on optimizing Rust. “Currently we are looking to reduce RAM consumption, which should provide a more stable experience for some players. We already have some improvements ready for testing that we hope will be released within the next month or two. This year we will hire optimization-oriented developers,” explains producer Alistair McFarlane. Unfortunately, the farts, announced since 2022, are falling behind schedule and will also require hiring experts. “We have put this project on hold, and it will not be released this year. […] We are currently looking for an AI developer to join us, improve the artificial intelligence of our entities and then finally help us develop pets.
