An APU that could well mark the end of graphics cards entry-level, completely outdated.
Not uninteresting, the graphics solutions integrated by Intel into its generations of processors have never made it possible to seriously compete with dedicated graphics cards, even entry-level. It is quite different with the various AMD APUs.
APUs boosted with RDNA 2
Behind the term APU – for accelerated processing unit or accelerated calculation unit – hides AMD’s desire to offer much more muscular integrated solutions and our recent test of the Ryzen 7 5700G with its Vega graphics part underlined the interest of the thing.
However, AMD promises to go much further and create an irremediable gap between the graphics performance of its APUs and those of entry-level dedicated graphics solutions. On paper, that’s the whole point of the Ryzen 6000s.
Called “Phoenix”, these new solutions must combine the best of both worlds for AMD: a state-of-the-art CPU part and what is practically the best in terms of graphics solution.
Zen 4 at the rendezvous
Indeed, you should know that if the Ryzen 7 5700G does integrate the best Zen 3 CPUs, its Vega graphics part is quite lagging behind while AMD is preparing to launch RDNA 3 solutions on the market, at least for its graphics cards. dedicated.
The Phoenix APUs, the Ryzen 6000 therefore, should evolve on the CPU side based on Zen 4 cores in 5nm. They are the guarantors of an even renewed computing power, but it is therefore above all the graphic part that interests us. The latest rumors do indeed report the integration of an RDNA 2 or even RDNA 3 GPU.
We obviously have some doubts about RDNA 3 since it is not even available on dedicated graphics cards yet, but the power of RDNA 2 would already make it possible to bypass entry-level dedicated graphics cards, especially whether we are talking about APUs with 16 or 24 calculation units.
There are still many unknowns of course, but the mere mention of RDNA 2 puts stars in our eyes and we begin to dream of APUs capable of going beyond 1080p, or even pushing the level of detail. However, let’s wait to see the price of such APUs, because as good as it is, the Ryzen 7 5700G is far from cheap.
