The rush of refugees gives us a nationwide peak in asylum applications before Christmas. In Lower Austria, Provincial Councilor Gottfried Waldhäusl is now vehemently insisting on solutions.
The forecasts that more than 120,000 people will apply for asylum in Austria this year will not come true. If you look at the 1000 refugees per week at the moment, the number will probably be 112,000, so far it is 110,000, 20,000 more than in the record year “In the record refugee year 2015 there were 90,000 asylum applications – this year there are 20,000 more. As many as Schwechat has inhabitants,” rumbles the asylum councilor Gottfried Waldhäusl, who does not stop insisting on solutions from the federal government. The Freedom Party only sees “announcement policy” in the black-green coalition and still misses solutions that he has been calling for since spring. “Clearly a failure of this federal government,” he says.Rejection demandedSpecifically, he wants asylum seekers at the border to other EU countries no longer to be picked up, but turned back. The border in Burgenland to Hungary is decisive here, because the neighboring EU state hardly allows any asylum applications. “Those who love their country protect it. That’s exactly what I do.”
