New features are coming to Safari, including an on-demand dark mode that should give users more flexibility.
A more advanced dark mode on Safari
iOS 15.4 is coming soon and already gives us a preview of future Safari features. The default web browser for Apple products continues to improve with new features, but not enough to prevent it from losing ground against the competition. Digging into the source code of Webkit, its rendering engine, 9to5Mac discovered that Safari will soon welcome a useful new option: an on-demand dark mode.
Currently, and since iOS 13, it’s all or nothing: all web pages adapt according to the mode chosen in iOS, light or dark. With this new functionality, users will be able to choose the display mode for each particular site, regardless of the default mode chosen in the operating system and whether the site in question was designed for this display or no.
On a similar note, Apple is also preparing an option to block or allow pop-ups from sites on a case-by-case basis on iOS and macOS. Last discovery and not least: an API for managing cookie consent, without anyone knowing more about it for the moment. It remains to be seen when all these new features will be available.
