(Boursier.com) — Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, has started delivering battery backup systems for Alstom’s Metropolis metro trains for the Grand Paris Express, the largest transport project in Europe. Saft has already supplied the first 10 battery systems for five trains out of a total of 183 trains that will be needed for the three new lines (15, 16 and 17) by 2030.
The batteries will power on-board signaling and control systems, security lighting, door control, communication systems, as well as ventilation, air conditioning, lighting and USB charging sockets.

Each battery system will provide a capacity of 130 amp-hours (Ah) and is based on the latest version of MRX nickel batteries, together with its accessories and battery box. The batteries are designed for long life of up to 20 years, high reliability for low total cost of ownership (TCO). In addition, their compact size allows Alstom to free up space in the passenger compartment.
