PARIS (Reuters) – The vital prognosis of a 30-year-old demonstrator who suffered a head trauma during clashes on Saturday between police and opponents of the project for a vast water retention reservoir in Sainte-Soline, in Deux-Sèvres, is still engaged, said the Niort prosecutor.

The Niort prosecutor, Julien Wattebled, also indicated that two other demonstrators, a 19-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man, were taken care of by emergency services in absolute urgency.

Two gendarmes, among the 29 injured, are also in absolute emergency, without vital prognosis, also indicates Julien Wattebled, adding that two journalists had been injured.

“The Niort public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the causes of the serious injuries concerning these people in absolute urgency to determine the exact nature of the injuries and the circumstances in which they were injured”, specifies the prosecutor.

Violent clashes erupted early Saturday afternoon between police and demonstrators protesting against a “mega-basin” project in Sainte-Soline.

During these clashes, four gendarmerie vehicles were set on fire.
