Sales of rosé wine are a hit this summer, thanks to the warm temperatures

In supermarkets, they jumped by almost 10% over the months of May to July compared to the same period last year.

A star product every summer, rosé wine is experiencing an exceptional 2022 summer season. Carried by the strong heat and the waves of heat wave, its sales in supermarkets, in value, jumped by almost 10% over the months of May to July compared to the same period last year, according to a study by the firm. NielsenIQ. “Warm weather at the start of summer boosted rosé sales“, emphasizes the panelist.

At the same time, red wine sales fell 8.5% this summer. An ever less fruitful season for this type of wine. Proof of the positive trend on which rosé is surfing, the sales of its main summer competitor, beer, progressed less this summer, by only 3%. “We can talk about dynamics, because for at least 5 to 6 years, beer has been progressing faster than wine», note to the echoes Nicolas Léger, Analytical Director at NielsenIQ.

Beer remains number one

However, beer remains by far the favorite alcoholic drink of the French in summer. It represents nearly a third of alcohol sales in value between May and July (31.6%), compared to 11% for rosé wine and its 400 million euros in turnover. If we only observe the month of June – the strongest month of the year for beer – the average consumption of a household reached 7.6 liters. “For years, beer has continued to grow and achieves 4.2 billion euros in turnover in 2022underlines NielsenIQ, which notes the notable growth of La Goudale (+21.3% in turnover over the past year compared to the previous twelve months), Desperados (+10.6%) and Corona (+10%).

The other novelty of this summer concerning rosé wine is its early consumption (remember however that it is to be consumed in moderation). Its turnover exceeded that of red wine (10.5% market share in May-July) from the third week of May this year, i.e. a month earlier than in 2021. Consumption on the rise which strengthens more than ever France’s leading position as the number one country for rosé. According to the latest data from the Observatoire mondial du rosé, more than a third of global consumption in 2019 (35%) was drunk by the French, compared to 15% in the United States and 7% in Germany.
