Salzburg’s Ringer – A new base camp for Mount Olympus

A state-of-the-art training center is designed to help AC Wals stay at the top of the world wrestling circuit. International camps are the first step.

Since 1952, the wrestling stronghold of Wals has sent 13 athletes to the Olympic Games. Amer Hrustanovic was last used in 2012 and ’16, in Tokyo nobody was there after he retired. In order to be able to climb Mount Olympus again, the Bundesliga record champion has opened a new base camp. Since the local fire brigade was expanded, the wrestlers on the first floor were also able to join in: In addition to a 270 square meter mat area including cameras for video analysis, this includes a state-of-the-art weight room with regeneration options and changing rooms. “We always have trainers and doctors or physios here,” explains Max Ausserleitner junior. In addition to full-time coach Hrustanovic, he and two other Walsers have been working part-time as supervisors since January. “We can now do a lot of things at home that we would otherwise have to go away for,” says Markus Ragginger, currently the star of the AC Wals as the U23 Vice World and Vice European Champion.Guests from all over EuropeThe claim: Joining the international top! Since it opened in September, departments from the Czech Republic, Hungary, the Ukraine and Georgia have been guests, with youngsters from Germany and France. “Everyone was satisfied and want to come back. We plan such camps regularly in the future,” says Ausserleitner. Another plus: Due to the central location, more national team courses are held. The project is considered the baby of the outgoing chairman and Olympic participant from 1992, Toni Marchl. The team is currently preparing for the home final in the Bundesliga on Saturday there. Then the 55th title will be duly celebrated in the Walserfeldhalle – for the first time since 2019 in front of spectators.
