Sam Waterston will no longer be filming Law & Order. After 20 seasons, the actor is quitting the crime series.
The longest-serving actor on “Law & Order” is leaving the crime series. Sam Waterston (83), who has been appearing on the NBC format since 1994, is leaving. The actor announced this on Instagram. The final episode featured him as Manhattan District Attorney Jack McCoy according to “The Hollywood Reporter” aired on February 22nd. Actor Tony Goldwyn (63), known from “Scandal” and “Oppenheimer”, will then join “Law & Order” as the new prosecutor, it is said.

Sam Waterston joined the series midway through its fourth season and is reportedly leaving halfway through its 20th season. He appeared as Jack McCoy in more than 400 episodes. The character was temporarily appointed district attorney in season 17 and won the district attorney position in the 20th and final season of the original series, which ran from 1990 to 2010. Waterston returned to the role when NBC picked up “Law & Order” in 2022.
In a statement to viewers of the series, Waterston said: “The time has come for me to move on and take Jack McCoy with me. It’s sad to go, but I’m just too curious to see what’s next. An actor Don’t want to get too comfortable. I’m more grateful to you than I can say.” The TV star added that the “enduring and amazingly long run” of “Law & Order” and the show’s amazing comeback “we owe to you and Dick Wolf, without his vision, patience, persistence and unique combination of creative and business talents “All of this wouldn’t have been possible. I feel very blessed.”
Waterston, whose career began in the 1970s, recently enjoyed great success with the series “Grace and Frankie,” among others.
