Samsung cell phones: This is different now when you install an update

When it comes to Android updates, Samsung is considered a pioneer. The South Korean manufacturer has steadily expanded its software support in recent years. Cheap entry-level models like the Galaxy A15 5G now receive updates for up to 5 years, and top smartphones like the Galaxy S24 even receive updates for up to 7 years. However, installing the new firmware on Samsung devices has usually been complicated. After downloading, you had to stop what you were doing for several minutes and wait until the new firmware was installed. This is now over.

As the usually well-informed Samsung fan blog SamMobile reports, the new Galaxy A55 now supports the “seamless updates” function. Thanks to this, you can continue to use your cell phone while installing an OS update. After the installation is complete, all you need is a quick restart.

The feature has been available on Android devices for years. Google introduced it in 2016 with Android 7.0 Nougat. However, Samsung has not yet integrated it into its version of Android called One UI. Currently only the Galaxy A55 supports the feature, but SamMobile assumes that Samsung will equip other cell phones with it in the future.

However, one downside remains: According to 9to5Google, it is probably not possible to retrofit the function on smartphones that are already available. Therefore, it will probably only be available on upcoming Samsung phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 6 or the Galaxy Z Flip 6.

You can tell whether a Samsung cell phone supports the new function by the fact that there are two progress bars on the update screen – one for the download and installation process and one for verification.
