Samsung cheats on the thickness of its watch

Did you expect it fine? It is much less than expected. In its measurements to determine the thickness of the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, Samsung knowingly omits to take into account the BioActive sensor… obviously too thick for its taste.

Samsung is cheating on the thickness and weight announced for its Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. This is what we remember from the measurements carried out independently by the DC Rainmaker blog, with a digital caliper. Measuring instrument in hand, the new connected watch from the Korean giant is significantly thicker than what is officially indicated: 15.2 mm, against 10.5 mm according to Samsung. This notable difference contradicts much of the discourse of the brand, which also wavers on the question of the weight of its new top-of-the-range tocante.

The measured thickness of the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro was 15.2mm, about 50% thicker than the advertised 10.5mm. And the weight ? More than double the specification. Apparently, Samsung does not include the weight of the bracelet in its measurements (although no caveat is stated) “says the blog.

The competition does the same (but is that really an excuse?)

This difference in thickness actually comes from a fiddly measurement from Samsung, which is content to take into account the thickness of the frame of its Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, without also measuring the large BioActive sensor which protrudes from the lower part of the show. Only part of the frame is therefore measured. In this case, Samsung can hardly plead the error since these measurements had been made correctly on the old versions of the watch.

That said, if Samsung is cheating on the actual thickness of the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, the increased protrusion of its BioActive sensor isn’t necessarily a bad thing. More salient, this sensor would allow better contact with the user’s skin… and therefore more precise readings. At least that’s what Samsung recently said in a press release: ” With an increased surface area and more direct contact with your wrist, the Galaxy Watch 5 tracks health metrics even more accurately than the Galaxy Watch 4 “.

Note in parallel that Samsung is unfortunately far from being the only one to cheat on the thickness of its connected watches. Apple and Garmin are obviously doing the same. DC Rainmaker had fun checking it out: the Watch Series 7, which should theoretically be 10.7mm thick, is actually 13.1mm; while the Garmin Forerunner 255 Music prances at 14 mm… against 12.9 mm on its specification sheet. Conversely, the Fitbit Sense is indeed 12.35 mm thick, as announced on its official page.
