Samsung deploys Galaxy AI on its old smartphones: here is the list

On March 28, Samsung will begin rolling out One UI 6.1, the update to its Android overlay, to some of its older devices. They will then benefit from the same AI functions as the Galaxy S24.

With its Galaxy AI software suite, Samsung is one of the first smartphone manufacturers on the planet, along with Google, to integrate generative artificial intelligence into its smartphones. The Galaxy S24s launched in January 2024 integrate several innovative functions such as the possibility of summarizing a conversation, translating a call in real time or surrounding a part of the screen to do a search. Galaxy AI is not a single service, but a set of several rather practical functions.

As soon as the Galaxy S24 was announced, Samsung wanted to reassure its former customers by announcing that Galaxy AI would gradually be offered on old high-end devices. The brand will deploy One UI 6.1, the update to its Android overlay, from Thursday March 28.

Which devices are affected by the Galaxy AI update?

Like any update deployment at Samsung, not everyone will necessarily be affected simultaneously. The lucky ones will receive the update on March 28, the others will definitely have to wait a few more days. Anyway, the update is finalized.

On its official website, Samsung announces deployment of Galaxy AI on the following models:

  • Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra: the high-end smartphones of 2023.
  • Galaxy S23 FE: the affordable version of the S23, launched in December 2023.
  • Galaxy Z Fold 5: the folding smartphone capable of transforming into a tablet, launched in summer 2023.
  • Galaxy Z Flip 5: Samsung’s folding clamshell smartphone, launched in summer 2023.

What about tablets? Samsung says One UI 6.1 update will also come to the Galaxy Tab S9, S9 and S9 Ultra ” this week “without indicating whether there will be a slight delay between the smartphones and the Tab S9.

Should we expect to see Galaxy AI land on other older devices in the future? It’s unlikely. Samsung’s strategy seems to reserve Galaxy AI for the high-end (which excludes the Galaxy A range) and the brand is certainly not going to go back too far, at the risk of hurting its sales.

What are the functions of Galaxy AI?

With Galaxy AI, Samsung is integrating several interesting functions into its official applications.

  • The keyboard can, for example, summarize text, change its wording or remove spelling mistakes.
  • Notes and the browser can summarize a page.
  • The Phone app can translate a call in real time.
  • The dictaphone can transcribe a conversation.
  • And the Photos app allows you to generate new outlines and edit an image.
  • Finally, the Circle to Search feature integrates Google Lens with Android, without having to launch an app.

In short, the One UI 6.1 update is important for owners of “old” high-end Samsungs, since it allows them to recover some of the best new features of the Galaxy S24.
