Launched at the start of 2020, the Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra will now be updated every quarter. Goodbye to the traditional monthly security update.
As you may know, the most recent Samsung smartphones (like the Galaxy S24) benefit from 7 years of software updates. Indeed, the duration of use of the same smartphone has increased, and manufacturers are adapting to these new consumption habits, with extended software monitoring. But this has not always been the case.
The end of monthly updates for the Samsung Galaxy S20
It was in 2020, Samsung launched its new Galaxy S20 range. As was the case at the time, the Korean giant provided more limited software monitoring, and smartphones have just benefited from their last monthly update in March 2024.
No panic, however, for owners of a Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+ or S20 Ultra, since this same monthly security update will now be quarterly. In all likelihood, smartphones should receive security updates for another year.
Support extended to 7 years with the new Galaxy S24
Remember that the last software update for the Galaxy S20 was launched at the end of last year, with a migration to Android 13. For its part, the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, launched a few months later, should have entitled to 6 months of reprieve and could well receive its April update.
Remember that the Galaxy S20 range benefited from a 4-year policy of security updates, and that the latter is therefore slowly but surely coming to an end. At the start of the school year, this will also be the case for the Galaxy Note 20 range.
From 2021, Samsung had extended the monitoring of its smartphones to 4 years of Android updates and 5 years of security patches. With the recent Galaxy S24, the Korean giant has opted for 7 years of updates (Android and security).

We had a great time with the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE. After several days spent with the Fold 2, I was more than happy to take control of such a light – even compact – smartphone.
The plastic finish on the back did not bother me at all, and the rest of the technical sheet even really convinced me. Bottom line: there’s not much that can be said to discredit the S20 Fan Edition. With the exception of its pricing positioning.
At €759 in its 5G version, the Galaxy S20 FE fits into a market segment already occupied by the OnePlus 8 Pro. Xiaomi, for its part, has just unveiled a Mi 10T Pro which, for only €599, combines a Snapdragon 865, a 108 megapixel sensor and a 144 Hz screen (LCD, of course). It’s difficult to compete, even when you’re ‘calls Samsung.
From our point of view, the Galaxy S20 FE should have only been offered in a 5G version, and launched at €649. There, Samsung would have shown its fangs. There, the value for money would be more obvious. But at almost €800, we would rather advise those interested to treat themselves to a classic Galaxy S20 which, constantly on promotion, can today be found at a knockdown price.
