Samsung Galaxy A53 VS A52: what improvements for Samsung’s mid-range smartphone?

Samsung formalized two new smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy A53 and A33, a few hours ago. The Galaxy A53 that interests us here will be marketed from 1^er April. It will cost 459 euros to acquire the 128 GB version and 519 euros to take advantage of the 256 GB version. Its ancestor, the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G 128 GB version, is currently displayed at 430 euros on Amazon. Beyond novelty appeal, is the A53’s extra $30 justified by the specs? Here’s what to make up your mind.

Same screen, same sensors

Let’s start with the templates. Both smartphones are almost carbon copies. The A52s measure 159.9 x 74.7 x 8.4mm. The A53 is a bit thinner with dimensions of 159.9 x 74.7 x 8.1 mm. Both smartphones display the same weight on the scale, namely 189 grams. In addition, IP67 certification is required for all four models.

Regarding the screen, the Samsung Galaxy A53 and the Galaxy A52 / s 5G are twins. They both have a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED panel in 20:9 format which displays a maximum definition of 2,400 x 1,080 pixels, i.e. a resolution of 405 dpi. For the A52/s and A53, the refresh rate is 120 Hz; on the other hand, it is “only” 90 Hz in the case of the Samsung Galaxy A52 4G.

On the camera side, again, Samsung has opted for the status quo. The newcomer retains five sensors: four at the rear (64 Mpx, 12 Mpx, 5 Mpx, 5 Mpx with respective openings in f / 1.8, f / 2.2, f / 2.4, and f / 2.4), one at the front (32 Mpx, f/2.2 aperture).

An Exynos SoC rather than Snadragon

The main changes are inside the smartphones, at the level of the SoC and the battery. The Samsung Galaxy A52, A52s 5G and A52 5G all have a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip. The former is powered by a Snapdragon 720G SoC, the latter by a Snapdragon 750G SoC, and the latter by a Snapdragon 778G SoC.

The Galaxy A53 abandons the American’s chips in favor of a Samsung SoC, in this case the Exynos 1280. This still provides eight CPU cores. Only it’s now a pair of 2.4 GHz Cortex A-78 cores and six 2 GHz Cortex A-55 cores.

The other improvement concerns the battery. The A53 inherits a battery with a capacity of 5,000 mAh, against 4,500 mAh for its predecessors.

On the other hand, on the RAM side, the Samsung Galaxy A33 is only offered with 6 GB. Its predecessor was available with the same amount but also in an 8 GB version.

Finally, if the A53 takes advantage of Bluetooth 5.1 and no longer just 5.0, it loses the 3.5 mm jack port.

Clearly, for those who already own a Samsung Galaxy A52 / s 5G, the interest in switching to the A53 seems quite limited. As for new buyers, if they find a Samsung Galaxy A52 / s 5G at a good price, they shouldn’t feel too aggrieved not to go with the latest model.
