Samsung would consider offering three versions of its Galaxy S22 FE and S23. In addition to the usual Exynos and Qualcomm, MediaTek would be there.
The end of a cycle for Samsung? The Seoul firm is considering integrating MediaTek chips into the future Samsung Galaxy S22 FE and Galaxy S23, according to the site Business Korea.
Phones with MediaTek chips would focus on the Asian market primarily. In Europe, we therefore expect to continue to see Samsung Galaxy S equipped with Exynos chips.
As reminded Android Authoritythe last time that Samsung equipped one of its flagships with three different chips dates back to 2011 and the Galaxy S2.
Why MediaTek is increasingly credible
Such news may seem surprising from the outset. Traditionally, for its high-end smartphones, the Korean giant opts for two chip suppliers, Qualcomm and Exynos (its own chip therefore). MediaTek finds itself relegated to certain mid-range models.
It’s a safe bet that the recent move upmarket of the Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer, with the presentation of an impressive Dimensity 9000, could have changed the way Samsung executives look at the designer. Some recent chips applied to the mid-range market have also shown themselves to be very efficient, such as the Dimensity 1200. The few setbacks of the Exynos 2200 on its latest Galaxy S22 may also explain the search for a new partner.
MediaTek still has everything to prove on the high end
As reminded Business Korea, MediaTek now has 26.3% of the market share in 2021, giving it a second place ahead of Apple (26%) and behind Qualcomm (37.7%). Samsung and its Exynos, found only on its own smartphones, capped at 6.6% market share.
However, MediaTek still has very little presence on high-end models, since 95% of its sales are on mid-range and entry-level devices.
