Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra versus Google Pixel 8 Pro: which smartphone to buy?

The Galaxy S24 Ultra, Samsung’s latest high-end smartphone, was presented last week. As usual with Samsung, the camera is the main focus, and this version features what might be the best camera ever in a smartphone. But the S24 also has a blazing-fast processor, some seriously innovative AI features, and one of the brightest displays we’ve ever seen.

On the other hand, another fantastic flagship, the Google Pixel 8 Pro, was released only a few months ago. It also has a high-end camera, several AI features and a very bright screen.

Both smartphones are at the top of their class, and both have quite similar specifications. But there are still enough differences between the two that the choice isn’t so difficult. So if you’re hesitating between the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and the Google Pixel 8 Pro, read on to find out which one is right for you.

1…you want the best camera

Both smartphones have a high-end camera, but the S24 Ultra performs better, especially when it comes to zoom.

It has an incredible 200MP main lens compared to 50MP for the Pixel 8 Pro, Nightography zoom to improve low-light photos, and AI-assisted zoom for telephoto (although zoom is technically a little less important than that of the S23).

Both devices come with a wealth of desktop editing features and you won’t be disappointed with either setup. But if you absolutely need the best phone camera (and you take a lot of zoom photos), go with the S24.

2… you want the S Pen

Designed to look like a real pen, the S Pen is a novelty that quickly becomes boring for some users, but is indispensable for others.

A Galaxy accessory for over a decade, it’s a fantastic tool for taking notes, signing documents, navigating your phone, controlling the camera, or drawing, obviously.

And if you’re used to it, there’s nothing like it on the Google Pixel 8 Pro. There are indeed third-party styluses compatible with the Pixel, but they are far from offering the same functionality as the Samsung stylus.

3…you want the best processor

Google’s Tensor G3 chip is certainly great, but the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 found in the S24 Ultra is one of the best chips available.

Both chips are at the heart of their smartphone’s artificial intelligence features, and while they are both powerful, it’s the S24 that comes out on top.

Not only will it be faster than Google’s, but it’s also more energy efficient, meaning it will use less battery. If you find that your current smartphone is slowing down because you’re putting it through intensive tasks or asking it to run a lot of apps simultaneously, you’ll probably want to upgrade to the S24.

1… you are shopping on a limited budget

If you’re investing in a flagship smartphone, you’re probably already aware that it probably won’t be cheap.

But if you want to save a little money on this flagship, opt for the Pixel 8 Pro. Because it costs €950 compared to €1470 for the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

And since the Pixel has been on the market a little longer, you’re more likely to take advantage of a good promotion or sale at a lower price. If you go with the Pixel, you’ll still get one of the best phones on the market that can handle any task.

2… you want to avoid spam calls

One of the most underrated features of the Pixel lineup is the call screening feature.

First of all, it not only identifies if a call is potentially spam, it allows you to answer the call with Google Assistant. In fact, he asks the caller the reason for the phone call. A transcript of what the caller said appears on the screen, and you have the option to ask another automated question, answer the call, or end the call.

Additionally, the assistant will navigate an automated menu for you, put you on hold, and alert you when you come into contact with a live person. If you want to experience fewer unwanted calls and avoid wasting time, turn to the Google Pixel 8 Pro.
