In addition to two new folding cell phones, Samsung also presented two smartwatches on August 10: the Galaxy Watch 5 and the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. While the “normal” Watch 5 is designed for classic everyday use, the Pro version focuses on outdoor use thanks to GPS and an even more robust design.
Galaxy Watch 5 with improved sensors for body monitoring
Samsung also installs the BioActive sensor in the Galaxy Watch 5, which you already know from the Watch 4. This measures the heart rate, the blood oxygen content and gives you information about your stress level. Because Samsung enlarges the surfaces of the buttons on the edge of the case and the watch offers a more direct contact with the wrist, users get an even more accurate result, according to Samsung. You will also receive values for your muscle, fat and water content.
The Galaxy Watch 5 not only monitors your body during your workouts, but also when you are resting. The watch can also offer you personalized workouts based on measured data. In addition, there is a sleep coach who creates a personalized guide for you for a month.
Samsung uses One UI Watch 4.5 in the Galaxy Watch 5, which is based on Google’s Wear OS 4. This means that all Google apps for smartwatches can be used on the smartwatch without any problems, including Google Wallet (formerly: Google Pay).
Comfort, size and display
The watch is very comfortable to wear and the operation on the wrist on the small display works perfectly. Of course, we weren’t able to check all the features in our short test, but we’ll do that in our detailed test. In general, the watch makes a solid impression. Depending on the size of your wrist, there are two versions of the Watch 5: 40 and 44 millimeters. The battery is 13 percent larger than the battery in the Watch 4 and now charges 30 percent faster.
The display of both watches is protected by a sapphire glass. We had the opportunity to scratch test the glass. In fact, there weren’t even any micro-scratches that we could see or feel through light or touch.
Galaxy Watch 5 Pro with a focus on outdoors
The Watch 5 Pro is even more resistant than the normal version. Because this watch offers a titanium case that protrudes over the display and thus provides additional protection. The watch has a diameter of 45 millimeters. It is significantly larger and thicker than the standard watch.
For the first time, the watch also offers GPS for outdoor use. You can view and navigate routes on the watch for hiking and cycling, among other things. Even if you stray (consciously or unconsciously) or choose an alternative route, the watch will guide you back to where you started – Samsung calls the function “track-back”.
The Galaxy Watch 5 offers the largest battery to date, according to Samsung it is 60 percent more powerful than the battery in the Watch 4.
price and availability
Both Galaxy Watch 5 models are available for pre-order between August 10th and 25th. The watches will be available on the market from August 26th. The 44mm version of the Galaxy Watch 5 is available in graphite, sapphire and silver. The small model comes in the colors graphite, pink gold and silver. Pre-orderers receive up to 150 euros Samsung Pay credit.
