Samsung has ordered Oled panels from LG Display

While Samsung should take advantage of IFA 2023 to unveil a first 83-inch television equipped with a WOLED panel manufactured by LG Display, the Korean daily The Elec tells us that Samsung has ordered its first WOLED panels from LG Display in beginning of June.

Samsung would have set its sights on WOLED slabs of 77 and 83 inches. They should be delivered by the end of June. The company would have asked LG Display to slightly modify the Oled panels so that they adapt to a specific specification. The changes requested by Samsung are unknown, but it is rumored that Samsung would seek entry-level Oled panels in order to offer affordable Oled televisions.

Televisions equipped with LG Display’s Oled panels would complete Samsung’s range of QD-Oled models currently available in 55, 65 and 77 inches. If the interest of an 83-inch WOLED television from Samsung seems obvious, since this diagonal is not available with Samsung Display’s QD-Oled technology, the interest of the 77-inch WOLED model is less obvious since this diagonal is already available from the Korean giant. The only advantage is probably being able to offer an affordable 77-inch Oled TV.

As a reminder, the WOLED panels produced by LG Display use a structure comprising four sub-pixels (white, red, green and blue), while the QD-Oled panels manufactured by Samsung Display are satisfied with three sub-pixels. LG Display panels are less expensive to produce and available in many sizes (from 42 to 97 inches). On the other hand, QD-Oled panels only available in 55, 65 and 77 inches are more expensive to produce; importantly, Samsung Display cannot increase production while demand is strong.

It remains to be seen how Samsung intends to manage the different technologies within the same range. The 55 and 65 inch models will be equipped with a QD-Oled panel, while the large 83-inch Oled TV should make do with a slightly less bright Oled (WOLED) panel. Finally, the 77-inch models should obviously opt for one or the other of these technologies…
