Samsung is preparing ultra-fast and less energy-consuming DDR5 RAM


The manufacturer Samsung is preparing to reveal a new DDR5 RAM memory that is much faster than current ones and less energy intensive. It would allow the creation of memory sticks of up to 1 TB.

The Korean manufacturer Samsung does not only offer high-end smartphones like the Galaxy S24. It is also a producer of essential computer components, particularly in matters relating to memory. At the end of January 2024, the firm announced GDDR7, quite simply the fastest video memory in the world. It promises never-before-seen performance and could be found on anticipated products such as future Nvidia RTX 5000 graphics cards.

But Samsung is also in the RAM memory, that which temporarily stores the data necessary for the processor to carry out the tasks requested of it. The latest technology is DDR5. Even if the vast majority of machines in circulation remain equipped with DDR4it will inevitably become the next standard while waiting to be replaced one day by the DDR6. Very soon, Samsung should reveal a 32 GB DDR5 RAM memory module able to provide twice the capacity of 16GB DDR5 RAM with the same case size.

Samsung to unveil a new kind of DDR5 RAM memory

At the end of 2023, Executive Vice President of DRAM Products and Technologies at Samsung SangJoon Hwang announced this revolution: “with our 32 GB 12 nm class DRAM, we obtained a solution that will allow the creation of DRAM modules of up to 1 terabyte , which will leave us ideally positioned to meet the growing need for high-capacity DRAM in the era of artificial intelligence and big data. We will continue to develop DRAM solutions through different process and design technologies [des actuelles] to push the limits [du secteur] of memory [RAM]”.

The new DDR5 RAM will have a speed of 8000 Mbps per pinwhile its energy consumption will be reduced by around 10% compared to today’s models, according to Samsung. This technology will allow the creation of memory stick of 32 and 48 GB of RAMwhich means that placing two in a PC will be enough to go up to 64 or 96 GB of RAM.
