Samsung pays homage to an old flip phone with its Galaxy Z Flip5 Retro

Flip terminals have made a comeback for several years now, thanks to the arrival of folding screens. Samsung is taking advantage of the twentieth anniversary of the SGH-E700, a flip phone unveiled in 2003 and the manufacturer’s first to benefit from a hidden antenna, to launch a limited series of its Galaxy Z Flip5, released this summer.

A hardware and software tribute

Called the Galaxy Z Flip5 Retro, this new model makes a few nods to the SGH-E700, starting with its indigo blue and silver color combination. It comes in an exclusive box, which includes three interchangeable cards with different historic Samsung logos, a card engraved with a unique serial number, as well as a cover that activates a dynamic wallpaper.

The tributes therefore do not stop at the hardware, but also concern the software. That of the Z Flip5 has been revised with a dedicated theme, which recalls the interface of the SGH-E700. In 2003 it was displayed on a very small interior screen of 128 x 160 pixels, supported by a screen of 96 x 64 pixels on the front.

The Galaxy Z Flip5 Retro retains the technical specifications of the classic Z Flip5, with an interior Dynamic Amoled panel of 1080 x 2640 pixels (6.7″ diagonal) and an external Super Amoled screen of 720 x 748 pixels (3. 4″ diagonal).

This limited series will be launched in Korea, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain and Australia. Only 50 copies are planned for the French market. They will be available from November 1 and sold only on the Samsung website, but we do not yet know their price. The classic Galaxy Z Flip5 was launched from €1,199 (8/256 GB version) and is now around fifty euros cheaper at certain resellers.
