Samsung takes on ChatGPT and Midjourney with a secret weapon: it’s called Gauss

Samsung has unveiled Galaxy AI, its own generative artificial intelligence which will be integrated into its future smartphones, such as the expected Galaxy S24. Behind this AI, a language model called Gauss, which allows you to carry out various tasks.

The Samsung AI Forum 2023 is taking place in South Korea these days, during which the Korean brand made announcements around artificial intelligence. The opportunity for the brand to present Gauss, its own language model. An AI that will arrive on Galaxy smartphones next year: we naturally think of the Galaxy S24 which should arrive here in February.

Samsung Gauss: the AI โ€‹โ€‹of the next Galaxy that can (almost) do everything

Galaxy AI is actually divided into several AI models. First there is Samsung Gauss Language, an LLM (large language model) or large language model in French. It is the equivalent of GPT from OpenAI, PaLM 2 from Google or even LLaMA 2 from Meta. It was named after the German mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, considered one of the greatest of all time. He was the one who established the theory of normal distribution, which is used today in AI machine learning. Samsung Gauss Language can carry out various tasks: translation, summarizing documents, writing emails, etc. Samsung specifies in a press release that it is also capable of taking control of the devices in which it is integrated. Unfortunately, we do not know what it will actually be able to do.

This LLM is complemented by Samsung Gauss Code, a different version specializing in computer programming assistance. Gauss Code can also describe code and generate code tests, all via a real interface.

On the other hand, there is Samsung Gauss Image, which is a generative AI model, like Midjourney or DALL-E 3 from OpenAI. It allows you to generate images from queries or to make modifications to existing images: change of style, additions, but also increase in definition. Currently, Samsung employees are testing this AI internally to improve their productivity, according to the company.

Galaxy AI: the integration of AI into Samsung smartphones

Unlike many AI tools, Galaxy AI does not work on Samsung’s servers, but on its products, its smartphones, its touch tablets. This is what could give Samsung a head start over other manufacturers, including Apple. Especially since the rumors, the Galaxy S24 could be entitled to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, announced a few weeks ago. This SoC helps support generative AI operations on the device directly. Today, almost only the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro can do this thanks to the Tensor G3.

Samsung seems to want to get ahead of this market. As a reminder, the brand had somewhat missed the voice assistant train, which never really picked up speed. Bixby has never managed to establish itself and Samsung is neglecting it somewhat. Let’s acknowledge that there is one thing Bixby does better than Google Assistant: its call screening option. Galaxy AI could make Samsung’s smartphones a distinctive selling point from competing models.
