What you have in front of you, just above, is the new remote control that will accompany all the new ranges of Samsung televisions in 2022. Having introduced the Eco Remote in 2021, the one that charges with solar energy , it adopts a new way of charging.

Harnessing the energy of electromagnetic waves

Like the previous remote control, it still has a mini solar panel to collect solar energy. Samsung has also added RF recovery capabilities which allow the remote control to keep its charge in “collecting radio waves from routers and converting them into energy“. Harnessing the energy contained in electromagnetic waves to power electronic applications is nothing new, but the Korean manufacturer has made it a reality in 2022.

The idea is to use antennas to collect the available electromagnetic waves, followed by a converter of radio frequency (RF) signals into a continuous signal (DC). Samsung can thus abandon AAA batteries… and use a small battery only.

Samsung explains that there are other ways to self-charge the internal battery, such as “harness the kinetic energy created when the remote control is shaken” and “use the vibrational energy created when the microphone picks up sounds“. However, RF recovery makes it possible to make the remote control functional even if it was hidden in the sofa for a long time.

Along with the new RF recovery option, the Eco Remote can be charged both from an outdoor and indoor light or (for the fastest results) via USB-C. Samsung is also announcing the introduction of a white remote control model this year, which will accompany The Frame, Serif and Sero models.
