Samsung unveils Gauss, a ChatGPT competitor designed for the Galaxy S24

During a forum dedicated to artificial intelligence, Samsung confirmed rumors about its intention to enter the field of generative AI. Several years after the international failure of Bixby, Samsung Gauss is relaunching it in the race for intelligent assistants.

Samsung Gauss, Samsung Gauss Code and Samsung Gauss Image: these three new generative artificial intelligences join ChatGPT, Google Bard, Midjourney and Adobe Firefly in a universe that has continued to develop in recent months.

Announced by the Korean giant during the “Samsung AI Forum” on November 8, the new Gauss brand undertakes to position Samsung in the sector of voice assistants capable of feats unimaginable a few years ago, thanks to generative AI. For the moment, no demonstration has been published. It must be said that Samsung has a habit of unveiling technologies (processor, photo sensor, etc.) before putting them in a product.

What will Samsung Gauss be used for?

Behind the term Gauss, Samsung hides several announcements:

  • Samsung Gauss Language is the name of its new language model (LLM), competitor to GPT-4 Turbo (OpenAI) or PaLM 2 (Google).
  • Samsung Gauss is a ChatGPT-style conversational agent. It can respond to messages, generate content and translate documents. We imagine that it will also be able to interact with Samsung devices.
  • Samsung Gauss Code is an AI for developers, to help them design applications more easily.
  • Samsung Gauss Image is a competitor to Midjourney. It can create images, modify them or increase their resolution with text commands. We imagine that Samsung has the Pixel 8 in its sights.

Will Samsung Gauss speak all languages? Or will it be limited to Korean, like Bixby? (Bixby is technically available everywhere, but it is only effective in its native language). For the moment, Samsung is not saying anything. The brand confirms rumors about its interest in generative AI, but Gauss will be presented later.

A Samsung Galaxy S24 boosted to Gauss on January 17?

Why Gauss? In homage to Carl Friedrich Gauss, a mathematician at the origin of certain foundations of AI. Samsung undoubtedly hopes that its brand will one day become popular, like Siri or Alexa. It remains to be seen whether Gauss will be free… or paid, in the form of a subscription.

For now, Samsung Gauss is reserved for Korean employees, who are testing it before a commercial (or beta) launch. According to rumors, it is the Galaxy S24 which will be the first to offer Gauss, undoubtedly with new functions in a smartphone (modification of images, automatic responses, super intelligent assistant, etc.). The date of January 17, 2024 would have been chosen by Samsung who would dream of making its announcement in San Jose, a few meters from Apple Park.
