The vaccination campaign of the Republic of San Marino is over. The small state in the north of central Italy mainly used the Russian Sputnik vaccine. According to the health authorities, the small state has now achieved herd immunity.
«The reaction to the vaccination campaign was immediately very positive. When we started the second vaccinations, we were able to immediately notice a decrease in the number of cases, ”explains Ivonne Zoffoli, head of the infectious diseases department at the San Marino Hospital.
San Marino was corona-free for several weeks
San Marino was recently a corona-free zone for several weeks. But then the cases increased again. “In the last two weeks we had new cases of the Delta variants,” says Zoffoli.
About 30 people are currently infected, 60 percent of whom are vaccinated. The symptoms are weak in everyone and the corona department of the hospital is empty.
Sputnik in Europe came recognized
A total of around 40,000 doses of Sputnik and 6,000 doses of the Biontech vaccine have been administered in San Marino to date. San Marino has around 33,500 inhabitants.
