Sandman rocks the house at Netflix


For its second full week of operation, Sandman almost doubles its number of views on Netflix. Neil Gaiman’s series is on its way to becoming a phenomenon.

Sandman is becoming the phenomenon of the summer on Netflix. The first two days on the platform were enough to make it the most-watched new series during its launch weekend. In its second week, Sandman had seven full days to confirm its strong performance and almost managed to double its number of hours seen from the previous week.

On Tuesday, Netflix’s weekly Top 10 ranking was updated by the streaming service, revealing the performance of the platform’s films and series from the previous week. From August 8 to 14, Sandman was watched for 127.5 million hours. In second place, season 3 of My first times has been viewed for 55 million hours.

From August 1 to 7, Sandman was viewed in a total of 69.5 million hours, an already very impressive number considering that the series was only available on the service for three days out of seven (it was released on 5 August). As the run of the series adapted from Neil Gaiman’s graphic novels continues on Netflix, it will be interesting to see if it continues to keep that upward curve.

For over 30 years, my role in Sandman adaptations was simply to try to prevent bad things from happening.

This was the statement of Neil Gaiman, the creator of Sandman, during the presentation of the series at the event tudum from Netflix. And the author continues:

And fortunately, I have always succeeded in this field. We arrived in 2020 and The Sandman was the biggest DC Comics property that had yet to be adapted. She was widely considered one of the crown jewels. It was adult comics that changed everything.

This adaptation is the first that convinced me to get on board. We’ve reached a point that didn’t really exist when The Sandman comics started. Thanks to their longer format, the series now have the special effects and the budgets to bring this world to life. Technologically, we can do Sandman in a way that we couldn’t have dreamed of 15 years ago, even 10 years ago.

It’s not easy but the resources are there, the people are there, the skills are there, and the determination is there. And now we have a whole generation of high-level creative people who grew up reading comics, who love them and want to bring them to life with authenticity.

It’s a Sandman made for people who love Sandman, by people who love Sandman, and it’s amazing to me. It’s so special.”

It now remains to wait for the official renewal of Netflix for a season 2.
