The outrageously expensive Netflix original “Sandman” starts on the streaming service – and you can look forward to some insane ideas in another fantasy world from “American Gods” creator Neil Gaiman. From August 5, 2022, all ten episodes of the first season of the comic adaptation will be available on the streaming service.
While young star Tom Sturridge slips into the leading role of the dream god Dream, acting heavyweights such as Stephen Fry (“V for Vendetta”) and Charles Dance (“Game of Thrones”) form a well-known framework for his confrontation with the devil – or rather the she-devil In “The Sandman” Hell is ruled by Gwendoline Christie – known to almost everyone for her brilliant portrayal of the knight Brienne in “Game of Thrones”.
“Sandman”: Next attempt after “American Gods”
However, “Sandman” is not the first film adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s material that revolves around gods and the occult: A few years ago, “American Gods” with Ian McShane and Pablo Schreiber already boasted breathtaking production quality – the costly implementation of “Sandman” shouldn’t be less.
However, the wonderful pictures of “American Gods” did not help to save the series, but rather demolished it: the high production costs were probably a major reason for the abrupt end after season in the narratively tough glossy production from US broadcaster home Starz 3.
Likewise, heaven and hell also play a role in Gaiman’s series “Good Omens”. Amazon Prime Video is already producing a second season. You can now find out on Netflix whether “Sandman” is finally a consistently coherent film adaptation of Gaiman.
