(Boursier.com) — On the occasion of the national congress of the Francophone Diabetes Society (SFD), SanofiLilly and DASTRI, the national eco-organization approved to collect and treat waste from healthcare activities with perforating infectious risks (DASRI), presented Recypen, the first French solution for recycling insulin injector pens in France.

The first collective initiative of this type on French territory, Recypen aims to reintroduce the material that makes up these medical devices into the production circuit of other objects and thus reduce the quantity of waste generated by the use of pens by patients.

This first recycling experiment in France of insulin injector pens from Sanofi and Lilly is currently being examined by the Directorate General of Health with a view to launching it in the 2nd quarter of 2024 in 4 pilot regions: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes , Occitanie, Grand Est, Hauts-de-France.

Tested for an initial period of one year, the program aims to collect 30% of the pens used by patients in the four experimental collection regions at the end of 12 months.

Remember that more than 84 million pens are needed each year for the care of insulin-dependent diabetic patients. Mostly made of plastic, these pens require 1,500 tonnes of plastic to be manufactured.
