Sarah Ferguson spoke about her role in the British royal family in an interview with the French magazine “Madame Figaro”. She also talks about the onset of media hype after her divorce from Prince Andrew.
Sarah Ferguson, 62, and Prince Andrew, 61, separated in 1992 after just six years of marriage. It is the year that is dubbed the “Annus horribilis” in the history books of the British royals to this day. A year in which three children of Queen Elizabeth, 95, separated from their spouses and hit the negative headlines. In an interview with “Madame Figaro”, the mother of Princess Beatrice, 33, and Princess Eugenie, 31, explained that their marriage into the British royal family was both a blessing and a curse. “I have always believed that anything is possible. In my legacy there is this DNA of the reed that does not bend,” says Sarah Ferguson, her perseverance and her resistance to the press as well as the royals.
Because the love affair between Sarah and Andrew should not last long: Prince Andrew and his wife at the time announced their separation in 1992 after spicy photos were published in the “Daily Mail”. On it: Ferguson on vacation in France with another man, while the Queen’s son was fulfilling his duties in the Royal Navy. The media hunt began. “I was perhaps the most persecuted woman in royal history, but I’m still here,” said the now 62-year-old, looking back on her situation. A statement that should raise some eyebrows and frowns in view of Princess Diana’s tragic death at the age of 36. But Sarah Ferguson is certainly not concerned with a comparison with her sister-in-law – but with her own assessment and feelings of an absolutely exceptional situation.
