SBB timetable change – SBB will use more trains through the Gotthard Base Tunnel from March – News

  • From March more trains will run through the Gotthard Base Tunnel.
  • Seven more passenger trains will now run on weekends, in addition to the current 31 trains.
  • In addition, from March 25th there will be an early train from Ticino from Monday to Friday.

At Easter, in mid-April, more trains also run, as the SBB reports. From March 2nd, 38 passenger trains will run through the Gotthard Base Tunnel every weekend. There are also three trains running from north to south on Saturday morning and four from south to north from Sunday afternoon.

This means that 4,300 additional seats can be offered. From March 25th, there will also be an early train from Ticino to German-speaking Switzerland from Monday to Friday. In Arth-Goldau there are connections to Zug and Zurich. Thanks to the early train, Ticino commuters can get to German-speaking Switzerland about an hour faster in the morning.

At Easter, the SBB runs 49 additional trains with around 49,000 additional seats on the Gotthard axis between Maundy Thursday and Easter Monday. A large proportion of the additional trains run through the Gotthard Base Tunnel.

Normal operation through the base tunnel in September 2024

With the timetable change in December, the original plan was to introduce half-hourly service through the Gotthard Base Tunnel. This innovation has been delayed due to the accident in the tunnel in August. However, according to SBB, the repair work in the Gotthard Base Tunnel is proceeding according to plan.

In addition to the work on the road, the two high-speed switches in the Faido multifunctional point were replaced, as it was said. The SBB assumes that normal operations through the base tunnel can be resumed in September 2024.
