He is the most brute speed rider in the World Cup – and is now being rewarded for his courage: The Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde secures the crystal globe in the downhill for the first time in his career. The winner of the overall World Cup has also been determined.

Norwegian ski racer Aleksander Aamodt Kilde has won the small crystal globe in the downhill for the first time in his career. Fourth place was enough for the 29-year-old to maintain his lead when Austrian Vincent Kriechmayr won in Courchevel. All in all, the friend of US ski star Mikaela Shiffrin was on the downhill podium four times this winter – including victories in Beaver Creek, Wengen and on the legendary Streif.

“He does it partly through brute force. He’s a machine. With pure violence,” Romed Baumann had recently praised his Norwegian opponent. As so often this winter, the German speed skier fell short of his expectations and finished 16th. Annoyed, he hit his skis in the icy snow when he looked at the result board. Best German was Dominik Schwaiger in twelfth place, Josef Ferstl finished in 23rd place.

With this, the German downhill skiers ended the World Cup winter without a podium finish. Schwaiger was nevertheless satisfied. “It was actually a relatively good season. It’s going in the right direction,” said the 30-year-old from WSV Königssee, who ended up 18th in the discipline ranking. Germany’s best downhill skier, Thomas Dreßen, missed the season due to injury. He plans his comeback for next winter.

Victory in the French Alps went to world champion Kriechmayr. Second was the Swiss high-flyer Marco Odermatt, who thus secured the big ball in the overall World Cup. Third place went to compatriot Beat Feuz. The next race for the speed experts of the alpine squad with the Super-G is already scheduled for tomorrow (11.30 a.m.). The German Ski Association will then be represented again with Baumann and Ferstl – as well as with Andreas Sander. The athlete from SG Ennepetal was not able to qualify for the downhill on Wednesday.
