Scotland awards offshore wind projects to TotalEnergies, Engie, BP and Shell

PARIS (Agefi-Dow Jones)–Energy companies TotalEnergies, Engie, BP, Shell and Iberdrola announced on Monday that they have won concessions from the Scottish authorities to develop wind projects off the country’s coast.

The tender was launched last year by the Scottish government. Seventeen projects out of 74 proposals have been selected, representing a combined capacity of 24.8 gigawatts (GW), Scottish authorities said on Monday.

“A total of just under £700 million (837.6 million euros, editor’s note) in option fees will be paid by successful applicants and passed on to the Scottish Government” to be allocated to public expenditure, have authorities said.

TotalEnergies notably won, within a consortium, a concession to develop a 2 gigawatt (GW) wind farm 30 kilometers off the Scottish archipelago of Orkney.

“This project, whose renewable electricity production should start by 2030, represents a potential investment of more than 4 billion pounds sterling” (4.8 billion euros), TotalEnergies said in a press release.

“As part of this development, the partners will invest £140m (over €160m) to support the development of local supply chain capacity and in particular the improvement of port infrastructure in Orkney and of Caithness,” said TotalEnergies.

The consortium, made up of TotalEnergies (38.25%), Green Investment Group (46.75%), a subsidiary of Macquarie, and RIDG (15%), a Scottish offshore wind developer, has also finalized a connection agreement to the electricity grid with National Grid, added TotalEnergies.

“Once built, this wind farm will also be able to supply renewable energy to a green hydrogen production facility under study at the Flotta terminal in Orkney,” said the energy company.

Ocean Winds, a joint venture between Engie (50%) and EDP Renewables Group (50%), has been awarded a project located in Moray Bay, east of Inverness, for a capacity of 1 GW.

ScottishPower, a subsidiary of the Spanish energy company Iberdrola, and its partner Royal Dutch Shell have been awarded two floating wind projects to the northeast and east of Aberdeen, representing capacities of 3 GW and 2GW, Shell said.

The British oil group BP, associated with the German group EnBW, has won a 2.9 GW project to the south-east of Aberdeen. BP expects investments of up to £10 billion for this project as well as for the development of carbon-free hydrogen production and electric vehicle charging stations.
