second-hand booksellers will challenge the dismantling of their boxes in court

They said on Monday that they were considering bringing the matter of the dismantling of their boxes on the banks of the Seine during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games this summer before the administrative court. On Friday, Parisian second-hand booksellers confirmed it: during their general meeting, nearly 130 of them (out of around 180 members) decided to take legal action. “legal action in the administrative court” to contest this operation, declared the president of the Cultural Association of Booksellers of Paris, Jérôme Callais.

This action is motivated by the fact that the Paris police prefect, Laurent Nuñez, specified, according to Mr. Gallais, that he refused to sign an order which would impose the closure of second-hand booksellers, the only way for them to be able to obtain financial compensation.

“The fact that this action was voted unanimously by the members (…) is up to the challenges and dramatic consequences that such a withdrawal would have”commented for Agence France-Presse their lawyer, Matthieu Chirez.

” Nothing to lose “

Monday, at the end of a meeting organized with representatives of Paris town hall and second-hand booksellers, the Paris police headquarters, which justifies this withdrawal of ” A few days “ by security requirements, had announced that it was ready to “sacrifice certain areas which will therefore not be open to the public (…) which allows you to save more than 170 boxes ».

The number of dismantled boxes would thus only reach 428 instead of 604, out of a total of 932 stowed at the quays of the Seine, the prefecture had specified.

Mr. Gallais, for his part, assured at the end of this meeting that the prefect would have conditioned this drop in the number of boxes moved on the non-launch of a legal procedure.

On Friday, Mr. Callais estimated that second-hand booksellers had not ” nothing to lose “ by going before the judge. They will ask him “non-abduction” boxes or, ” last resort “compensation and “dignified and respectful treatment” of their small open-air bookstores, listed as French Intangible Cultural Heritage, the first step towards possible recognition as UNESCO World Heritage.
