Newcomer in the second season “The King of Palma”: What role does Heike Makatsch play?
“Der König von Palma” goes into another round: RTL shows the second season on two Tuesdays (July 11 and 18, 8:15 p.m., three episodes each, from July 11 all episodes on RTL+). Heike Makatsch (51) is new. In the new episodes she plays Sylvie Adler, the wife of Mallorca emigrant Matti Adler (Henning Baum, 50).
In the first season, Sandra Borgmann (49) played this role. RTL announced her departure in September. “Because Sandra Borgmann embodied Sylvie very strongly in season one, I had to break away from that a bit and say to myself: ‘Okay, I’m not Sandra, I’ll free myself now and put on Sylvie in my own way ‘, explains Makatsch in an interview with RTL.
Special connection to the island
For Sylvie, family is the essence of life, the actress describes her character. “And when it all collapses, this woman also breaks up a bit.” Playing it and embodying it emotionally was a great challenge for her, explains Makatsch. Speaking of her character, she adds: “She dreams of security and a future without taps and sangria. That’s why her fashion, which is still anchored to a certain extent in the 80s, is a little dignified. She certainly had a wilder one at one time time in her life.”
A positive side effect of the shooting: Heike Makatsch has a close connection to Mallorca. The island has been her “place of longing” since she was a child. “To me, however, Mallorca means less partying and sangria than a connection to nature and peace of mind. Parts of my biography have grown together with Mallorca.” She’s always been to the island, “all my life. But to the mountains, not so often to the sandy beach, and I’ve had a lot of happy moments here.”
“The King of Palma” season two: between family drama and crime
What’s next in season two? In 1992, emigrant Matthias “Matti” Adler was able to establish himself on the Playa with his “Bieradler”. Matti wants to use the success and expand. But the Playa de Palma is a highly competitive area and so the emigrant must consider how much he wants to risk in order to assert himself against the competition. The second season will be a little darker than the first, reveals Makatsch. Viewers should be prepared for emotional rollercoasters – “Murder, drugs, fraud and love and suspense – everything is there, just not a true happy ending”.
“‘Der König von Palma’ continues the skilfully built character arcs of the first season and, as a sequel, focuses even more on the balancing act between family drama and crime,” explains Florian Gottschick, director of episodes one to three. Matti is torn between his responsibility towards his wife and children, the love of his life and the fight for his professional existence “and soon it’s about survival for everyone involved”.
Isabell Šuba, director of episodes four through six, adds that this time Matti “has more to lose than season one and there’s a whole new vulnerability in that.” His affair with Bianca, played by Pia-Micaela Barucki, doesn’t make the situation any easier either. “His wife Sylvie, played by the impressively playful Heike Makatsch, doesn’t put up with anything from Matti anymore. So does Bianca, who no longer feels like chasing after Matti blindly.” Matti maneuvers himself from disaster to disaster while the women around him pursue their own agendas.
In addition to Heike Makatsch and Henning Baum, André Hennicke (64), Martin Semmelrogge (67), Eva Mona Rodekirchen (47) and Sönke Möhring (50) will be there again. In season two, Sonja Kirchberger (58) plays another role in the pub landlady Biggi.
