The World Cup in Qatar claims another fatality. A security guard reportedly from Kenya has died after falling at the stadium. The World Cup organizers promise the family all outstanding wages.
Another death occurred at the World Cup in Qatar. Security guard John Njue Kibue, a Kenyan migrant worker according to CNN, died in hospital three days after falling at Finals Stadium in Lusail on Tuesday. This was announced by the World Cup organizers.
The security guard fell from a “significant height” after the quarter-finals between Argentina and the Netherlands, the “Guardian” reported. According to this, the incident happened after the end of the game at 2 a.m. local time, after the hospitality emptied after the game. After immediate medical care, he was taken to the intensive care unit of the Hamad Medical Hospital in Doha, but died there “despite the efforts” on Tuesday. According to official information, it is said to have been the fourth death in connection with the World Cup. According to media reports, however, several thousand workers have died on Qatari construction sites since the 2010 World Cup was awarded.
The tournament organizers announced an immediate investigation into Kibue’s death. It is still unclear how the unspecified fall came about. In addition, they promised to pay the family of the deceased any outstanding wages and taxes.
A worker apparently from the Philippines had already lost his life during the tournament. The man died as a result of an accident during repair work in the team hotel of the Saudi Arabian delegation.
Several deaths among accredited journalists during the World Cup also caused dismay. The US sports journalist Grant Wahl collapsed and died in the media stand during the quarterfinals between Argentina and the Netherlands. Photojournalist Khalid al-Misslam from Qatari news channel Al Kass TV died on Saturday, his employer confirmed. Roger Pearce, the technical director of British TV broadcaster ITV Sport, died on November 21 during the World Cup.
