SEGA opens a new development studio in Japan

SEGA Sammy is a group with multiple activities. But its main source of income is undoubtedly video games. This sector, managed by SEGA Corporation, is doing very well at the moment. And the Japanese publisher is not lacking in ambition for the future. In order to better equip itself to achieve this ambition, SEGA wants to increase its game production capacity.

SEGA has just announced the opening of a new development studio in Japan, and more specifically in Sapporo. The latter, logically named SEGA Sapporo Studio, will have a double mission. The first will be game development. The second will be to contribute to the debuting of other games produced by SEGA.

In recent years, SEGA had gotten into the habit of buying structures located all over the world. This is how the Japanese publisher acquired Atlus, Sports Interactive and Amplitude Studios. But obviously, this strategy was not enough for SEGA.

SEGA opens a new studio to stay in the race

Sonic’s house explains that there is currently a “urgent need“for game producers of”to strenghten“their development capacities. This need is caused by the rapid fall of barriers that could prevent access to video games. The last few years have seen an explosion in the number of devices and platforms providing access to video games. Practices have also diversified.

As a result, the number of players has also exploded. This is causing the video game market to grow worldwide. SEGA therefore sees opportunities in this situation and does not want to miss the boat. And for him, the opening of a new studio in Japan is therefore a necessary step.

An old man of the old to lead the new structure

In parallel with the announcement of the opening of this new studio based in Japan, SEGA revealed the personality placed at its head. It is therefore Takuya Segawa who will chair SEGA Sapporo Studio. A SEGA employee since 1992, he is best known for making baseball games. He however also served as a producer on the first Mario & Sonic at the Olympics as well as on Phantasy Star Online 2.

Finally, it should be noted that SEGA has not yet specified the content of the first projects on which SEGA Sapporo Studio will work.
