SEGA talks about its insane and overpriced “Super Games” project

SEGA has money to spend and intends to allocate it to a large-scale project. Today we have a lot of information on this mysterious creation.

While SEGA has just released Sonic Superstars and is about to launch Yakuza Like a Dragon Gaiden. That’s for the very short term, but the Japanese publisher is secretly working on something huge. A project called “Super Game” and which is not what you might think.

Super Game, SEGA’s huge project, says more

Do you remember SEGA’s “Super Game”? No ? We’ll explain it to you again. This name does not hide a game that would be “incredible”, but rather several AAA titles which seem to form a sort of whole. “We are making constant progress in the development of the Super Game that we wish to develop in the medium and long term. As the name suggests, a “Super Game” implies that the concept goes far beyond traditional games.. Each title would be different and go beyond the simple framework of video games. SEGA, for example, mentions a bridge with players, streamers who broadcast games and viewers.

The explanations are still vague, but now we know the budget and the release window. SEGA plans to spend more than $800 million. A colossal sum, greater than GTA 5 or the more than 600 million of Star Citizen, but spread across several productions for once. When will this enigmatic project be released? Not before 2026 at the very least. But SEGA seems confident with this window since it was shared by the publisher in a document intended for its investors.

According to the Japanese company, this Super Game project must meet four different criteria with multiplatform games, translated into several languages, planned worldwide at the same time, and finally, have AAA status. Given the amounts mentioned, the last box already seems well ticked. But does this concern licenses known to the publisher?

An initiative with Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio and the cloud?

Aside from the budget and the progress made, SEGA is careful not to reveal information that would reveal the true nature of Super Game. But according to Bloomberg, new games Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio would be part of this initiative. Take it with a grain of salt because this indiscretion does not come from Jason Schreier, but from his colleague Takashi Mochizuki. In any case, the Japanese company has very big ambitions and has even declared that it wants to become the “Marvel of video games”.

“Marvel, for example, continually renews Spider-Man while retaining the name Spider-Man. And other products other than Spider-Man also have the Marvel touch. SEGA can be a Marvel of the video game industry.” Reassuring or not, you tell us. This Super Game could also involve, in one way or another, cloud gaming. The publisher announced “Fog Gaming” in 2020. Another idea which aims to exploit the components of a Japanese arcade terminal, outside opening hours, to stream games. Or how to “experience” the arcade without leaving home.
