In Lyon, you now have to scan your identity card to be able to borrow an electric scooter.

A way for operators to prohibit access to these self-service two-wheelers to underage users.

Mandatory age check for self-service electric scooters in Lyon

The phenomenon of electric scooters has been dividing the crowds for a few years now. Many are those to point out the dangers of these machines as well as their excess. Two years ago, the city of Lyon limited the fleet to just 2,000 machines per operator and was working to optimize parking areas.

Today, after a visibly conclusive test phase, we learn that the rental of self-service electric scooters is now prohibited for users under 18 years of age. Recall that at the end of August, a private ambulance fatally struck two teenagers who were riding an electric scooter in Lyon.

Dott and Tier, the two operators who are authorized to circulate in the city of Lyon, now systematically ask for an identity document when renting an electric scooter. This measure had already been tested locally last year and therefore comes into force in September.

In addition, the city of Lyon will select two new operators who will enter service in March 2023. They will take over from Dott and Tier, whose lease which ended at the end of September was finally extended by 6 months. Each must be able to offer and manage a fleet of 2,000 scooters.

A call for projects has already been launched, and the latter emphasizes four fundamental points, namely: the durability of the machines, the safety of the users, the accessibility of the service as well as the modal shift and the intermodality.
