Series canceled for this 90s sci-fi masterpiece

Showtime has indeed chosen to abandon four series in development, including the reboot of “Welcome to Gattaca” by the creators of “Homeland”.

The Gattaca series, adapted from the cult 1997 sci-fi film will not take place. Indeed, according to the Hollywood Reporter (via ComingSoon), the show will have no future on Showtime. The channel also dropped three other TV projects: Seasoned with Mandy Patinkin, Split and Sweetness. Sony Pictures Television, which produced Gattaca And Sweetnessplans to attempt to sell both series elsewhere.

The revelations come after Paramount Chairman and CEO Chris McCarthy began overseeing Showtime last year. It would seem that, under its control, Showtime would now seek to focus on the intellectual properties that the channel owns, rather than licensed properties like the film which the series was to reboot, Welcome to Gattaca, which is why the network has deleted the show from his calendar.

MOST PLAUSIBLE SCI-FI FILM ACCORDING TO NASA

In 2011, NASA designated Welcome to Gattaca as the “most plausible science fiction film in the history of cinema”. The dystopian feature film, which on its release did not enjoy the expected success but still received an Oscar nomination for best art direction and a Golden Globe nomination for best original score, has since become a classic.

As a reminder, the film stars Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law. Written and directed by Andrew Niccol, it immerses us in the near future where science and humanity had evolved to the point that the latter could direct its own evolution and thus determine the future of a child before its birth. As companies screen their employees based on their genetic makeup, Vincent (Ethan Hawke), an ordinary man with a congenital heart condition then tried to impersonate Jerome (Jude Law), ideal specimen, in order to realize his dream of traveling in space.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Homeland creators Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa have teamed up with Oscar-nominated screenwriter Craig Borten to develop a TV reboot of the cult film. At the time, it was clarified that the series was a “significant commitment” for Showtime. We can now only hope that another channel takes over the project.

Welcome to Gattaca is to be rediscovered in streaming on FilmoTV.
