Ukraine: $486 billion needed for recovery and reconstruction

Ukraine will need 486 billion dollars (around 450 billion euros) for its recovery and reconstruction after two years of war caused by the Russian invasion, according to an estimate published Thursday by the World Bank (WB), l the UN, the European Union and the Ukrainian government. The previous assessment, published in March 2023, amounted to 411 billion dollars (a little over 380 billion euros).

The damage is concentrated in the regions of Donetsk (East), Kharkiv (Northeast), Luhansk (East), Zaporizhia (South), Kherson (South), all located near the current front line, and kyiv (North). ).

“Across the country, 10% of housing stock has been damaged or destroyed, prolonging the displacement of Ukrainians from their environment”it is added.

The destruction of the Kakhovka dam (South) and the hydroelectric power station in June 2023, blamed by kyiv on Moscow, whose troops occupy the area, “has had significant negative impacts on the environment and agriculture and has exacerbated the difficulties already faced by people struggling to access housing, water, food and health services”adds the World Bank.

According to the World Bank, the figure of $486 billion, estimated over ten years, concerns housing (17%), followed by transport (15%), commerce and industry (14%), agriculture (12%), energy (10%), social protection and livelihoods (9%) and explosion risk management (7%).
