Several hundred places – Increased asylum numbers: the federal government is already setting up tents

The massive increase in the number of asylum seekers is causing considerable problems with accommodation. As with the refugee crisis of 2015, migrants have to be housed in tents. The construction of the tents will start this weekend, the Federal Support Agency (BBU) announced on Friday. The tents will be set up on federally owned land and the people there will remain under federal care. The first locations are in Carinthia, Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Upper Austria.

“Primarily properties and land owned by the federal government are used as locations,” says BBU Managing Director Andreas Achrainer. No tents will be set up in the Traiskirchen initial reception center because it is already full, it is emphasized. In the Thalham initial reception center, on the other hand, some are set up, possible other locations are police departments that have the appropriate areas. According to the BBU, young men traveling alone who are not likely to stay are accommodated in the tents. Women, children and families are accommodated in permanent accommodation. In a first step, space for several hundred people will be created with the tents. Eager search for permanent accommodation The BBU once again appealed to the federal states to provide accommodation. Yesterday, Thursday, a state refugee conference was held with Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP), which primarily dealt with the accommodation of asylum seekers. The Minister of the Interior emphasized that the clear goal was to prevent homelessness. BBU Managing Director Andreas Achrainer emphasized that the BBU was close to the limit when it came to accommodation options. The BBU currently accommodates 8,000 people, but around 5,600 of them have been admitted to the asylum procedure and should therefore switch to the state’s basic welfare system, argued Achrainer.
