  • Due to heavy rain and flooding, Yellowstone National Park in the USA has been closed to all visitors until further notice.
  • The heavy rainfall caused mudslides and washed away roads and bridges. Some communities had to be evacuated.
  • So far there have been no reports of injuries.

Some of the worst damage has occurred in the northern portion of the park and in the Yellowstone communities of southern Montana. Small towns were cut off by the aftermath of the storm and had to be evacuated by boat and helicopter.

The Yellowstone park administration spoke on Monday of “record floods” that would have washed away roads and bridges. She also warned of falling rocks, mudslides and “extremely dangerous conditions” in the park. Numerous people were brought to safety and the entrances were closed.

Park will be closed through Wednesday

“We will only know when the park will reopen when the flooding has receded and we can assess the damage throughout the park,” said the park operator. The park will definitely remain closed until at least Wednesday. Yellowstone National Park is almost entirely in the state of Wyoming, but stretches as far as Idaho and Montana.
