(dpa) Consensual sex between men will no longer be a criminal offense in Singapore. The island nation’s government will repeal a colonial-era law criminalizing sex between men, Premier Lee Hsien Loong said in a televised address on Sunday. Consensual adult sexual relations are a private matter. “There is no justification for prosecuting or convicting people for this,” he said.

So far, paragraph 377A introduced in British colonial rule for “acts of gross indecency” between men provides for a prison sentence of up to two years. In practice, however, it is not actively enforced.

However, there are no plans to recognize same-sex marriages, Lee said. “Singapore is a traditional society with conservative values,” the speech said. According to the government, marriages should be made between women and men and children should grow up in “traditional families”.
